Song From the Depths

Written by Tanya Elchuk

YA novel (85,000 words)

16-year-old mermaid Maya knows sirens are murderous enchantresses, and singing is forbidden because it is dangerous. Still, when she hears siren song, she can barely suppress the rising urge to join in. When a human trapper attacks her swim buddy, Maya can no longer quell the tide. Her song bursts out, driving back the trapper and bringing her into an unexpected alliance with a group of vigilante sirens. Maya struggles to discern if her attraction to the sirens—especially their beautiful and enigmatic leader—is real, or if she has been enchanted. She is just as confused by her crush on a charming human boy who keeps crossing her path. With mermaids going missing and the Mermaid Council pointing fingers at the sirens, Maya needs both the sirens’ and the boy’s help to rescue the missing maids. Risking banishment from her pod and capture by trappers, Maya races to master her voice, track down the trappers, and bring the lost maids home, before another one disappears. When she brings her adopted selkie sister along on the mission, inadvertently leading her into a trap, Maya must reassess who she can trust, and whether her song is a curse to be freed from, or a gift worth fighting for.
