Song From the Depths

Written by Tanya Elchuk

YA Fantasy (88,000 words)

A misfit mermaid seeks dark siren magic to rescue her friends from human predators. THE LITTLE MERMAID meets KPOP DEMON HUNTERS

Sixteen-year old mermaid Maya is harboring many secrets: her sister’s forbidden human boyfriend; what really happened the night her friend Gemma disappeared; and worst of all, her overwhelming urge to sing whenever she hears siren song. Sirens are murderous enchantresses and singing is punishable by banishment. But when a human hunter attacks her swim buddy, Maya’s song bursts out, driving back the attacker, and bringing her into a precarious alliance with a pod of vigilante sirens.

Maya is enamored with the sirens’ enigmatic leader, but dismisses her feelings as enchantment. And she’s just as confused by her feelings for the charming human boy she keeps crossing currents with. But with the Mermaid Council’s search efforts failing, Maya needs both the sirens’ and the boy’s help. Risking banishment from her pod and capture by hunters, Maya races to master her song, track down the hunters, and rescue the missing maids, before any more disappear. As violence with the hunters escalates, and her secret double life becomes harder to conceal, Maya must choose between retreating to the safety of her pod or embracing the sirens’ dangerous freedom. And that means deciding whether her song is a curse to be freed from, or a gift worth fighting for.
